Pohang International Fireworks Festival

Once a year we, the lovely people of Pohang, are rewarded for ....being alive, with a fireworks festival.  All year the fair people wait for their chance to see the sky above their beloved POSCO lit up with reds and purples, greens and whites, colors that give hope to our city.  That's not really true.  Most of my students had no idea that it was happening and many of them did not care.   "Teacher, is it a Samsung Galaxy SIII?" "No" "Then it's boring."  There were a couple of my 3rd and 4th grade students who went and enjoyed.  And yes, we enjoyed.  As always, here's 10 pics and some foolish comments.

Fireworks

I wanted to try out my new camera on this light show.  The pictures turned out OK, but as I scroll through hundreds of pictures of fireworks, I'm kind of bored.  Pictures just don't capture the sound of the fireworks and the smell of the smoke and the heat of the sidewalk and the oohs and ahhs happening all around.  But I thought this picture was pretty, so here it is.

The Crowd

This is just one small part of the massive crowd that descended on Hyung San River Park for the event.  The tents in the back were food tents and vendors selling everything from clothes to kitchen appliances.  The motto here is if there are people, they'll buy something, which leads to the ability to buy a pair of North Face shorts at the fireworks festival.

Enjoying the Show

Wow, two beautiful people.  And us.

Red Fireworks, Blue Fireworks

Another Firework shot.  I liked this one a lot.  The colors came out well and the two levels are kind of cool.

Gotham

Technicolor Gotham.  POSCO took its design cues from Joel Schumacher's Batman franchise.  Jim Carrey's Riddler would be right at home.  Seriously, they could have chosen anything and they chose 90's era Gotham.

Bingo

The fun and games.  Intense Bingo.

Coconuts

Sara gets a coconut.  It was overwhelmingly salty and not delicious.

Wish Me Luck

This game involved throwing coins onto a numbered mat and getting points based on the number the coin landed on.  This girl was seriously into it, although I don't think she won any prizes.

Hello, Kitty

I like the juxtaposition here.  Shoot the target and you get your choice of an oversized stuffed Hello Kitty or whiskey.  Your choice, up to you.

Slow Roasted Pork

Pig!!!! This was awesome.  Slow roasted pulled pork served with a spicy dipping sauce.  Everybody at this outdoor restaurant got a kick out of us and the people at the table next to us bought us cokes.

Overall, we had an awesome night.  Korea can be a surprising wonderful place, and this was one of those times.  If we're in Pohang next year, I'll be at Bukbu Beach for the fireworks festival.
